GOLDA: Behind-the-Scenes Discussion

Join Golda Meir House Museum Executive Director, Lena Fishman, in a unique behind-the-scenes discussion of Golda, a biographical thriller and astounding portrayal of the fourth prime minister of the State of Israel battling for the survival of her nation during the Yom Kippur War. Historically, this moment has often been portrayed as Golda’s downfall. However, in this triumphant film, the historical record is reexamined to accurately reflect Golda Meir to be one of 20th Century’s most remarkable leaders, her unwavering strength, and her tremendous capacity to be not only the toughest in the room but also the most empathetic.

This program will reveal little-known stories about the creation of the film with information that comes directly from Golda’s grandchildren, the screenwriter, director, and actors Helen Mirren and Liev Schrieber. The discussion will also cover Golda’s inspirational time as a runaway teenager in Denver and the amusing and accidental way this impactful moment makes its way into the film.

In addition, audiences will be sent a link to watch the new documentary “Golda’s War Diaries” at home before the discussion of the feature film. Based on the archives released in 2023 to mark the 50th anniversary of the war, “Golda’s War Diaries” tells the story of those fateful days in the Prime Minister’s own words and the words of those who were with her. A perfect complement to “Golda,” Yariv Mozer’s 73-minute documentary adds critical context to the feature film. Watch a clip here.

Lena Fishman is the Executive Director of the Golda Meir House Museum on the Auraria Campus in Denver, Colorado. She grew up in Denver and after twenty years of teaching, Lena became the Strategic Partnerships Manager in the Office of Community Engagement at the Colorado Office of the Attorney General where she worked on statewide initiatives for students, teachers, and older adults. In the summer of 2021, Lena was recruited to revive the Golda Meir House and turn it into a museum dedicated to women’s empowerment that stands proudly against antisemitism and hatred of any kind. Lena is honored to teach visitors about the inspirational part that the state of Colorado played in Golda Meir’s lifelong work to make the State of Israel a reality.
