Event Details
On January 18, 1945, 14-year-old Dugo Leitner walked the death marches with approximately 60,000 other prisoners from Auschwitz. During the march, his mother told him about the amazing vegetarian meatballs in Israel, and they both dreamed of eating them when he would eventually reach the Land of Israel.
He survived the march, and upon his arrival in Israel, he visited the Mahane Yehuda market for the first time. There, he saw a falafel stand, and the sight of the falafel balls reminded him of the story his mother had told him, which had kept his spirit alive during the darkest moments of his journey.
Since that day, every year on January 18, Dugo ate falafel to celebrate his survival.
This tradition was carried on by Dugo until he passed away a few years ago. Since then, it has been observed by communities around the world. We will mark this day in our Colorado community by enjoying falafel together and participating in a program featuring comedy sketches by community members, reflecting the joyful and optimistic spirit of Dugo.
