Why Are You?: We return to the Tree of Life (Space) and focus on the “abstract” story level of our lives through engaging in metaphor work. The key to this inquiry is the realization that we are all living inside of the metaphors (stories) we have created or have been created for us with the practical implication of choosing, modifying or changing those stories.

Event Details
Sending a child to college has always stirred complex emotions in parents. The pride in watching our children step into adulthood is mixed with a bittersweet awareness of the passage of time and our empty (or emptying) nests. However, since Oct. 7th, Jewish parents face a whole new set of questions and concerns. Will my child face hostility or discrimination due to their Jewish identity? Will discussions about Israel and Zionism impact their campus experience? What support systems exist for Jewish students navigating these challenges? And what is my role, as a parent, in this new (ab)normal? Parents and teens headed to college encouraged to attend.
Registration coming soon.

3G Colorado is the Denver-based chapter of a non-profit organization, Living Links, which was founded by the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. As living links, we preserve the legacies and the lessons of the Holocaust. Our mission is to educate diverse communities about the perils of intolerance and to provide a supportive forum for the descendants of survivors to explore our shared history and to keep our ancestors’ memories alive. We’ll work together to empower the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Holocaust survivors to share the stories and testimonies of their grandparents’ survival.
Join us for our inaugural event at 2:00pm on Jan 12, 2025 at Lowry Beer Garden, located at 7577 E Academy Blvd, Denver, CO 80230.
This will be a casual meet-up to connect, discuss our goals, and lay plans for the year. All descendants of Holocaust survivors, spouses, and partners are welcome.

Event Details
On Sunday, January 12, at 2:00 pm, a beautiful new Synagogue and community center will open at 2810 Jay Road, Boulder. It is the culmination of the remarkable community-building efforts of Rabbi Pesach and Chany Scheiner, co-directors of the Boulder County Center for Judaism, and will serve as the 30-year-old organization’s new headquarters.
Architect Dave Lee of Fleetemeyer & Lee said, “We created a floor plan for the building and courtyard utilizing the geometry of two overlapping squares. The space where these squares overlap at the center forms the most sacred place of worship.”
Interior Designer Channah Hinseth said, “The colors, patterns, and textures of the building are a vision of cool water flowing over golden rock and rich copper. With the sparkling Colorado sunlight that pours through these windows, the experience is that of nature itself, refreshing and rejuvenating.”
Excitement in the community as opening day approaches is building to a peak. Community member Laya Jackson said, “The opening of this new center is a dream come true for the Boulder County Center for Judaism, and an incredible gift for everyone who will come to celebrate, learn, question, debate, share stories, and navigate life’s ups and downs— all with a focus on the joyful spirituality of a Jewish Torah walk.”
Rabbi Deborah Ruth Bronstein, Rabbi Emerita of Congregation Har HaShem, said, “The new center will provide community and sanctity and a holy aliveness.”
A vibrant turnout is anticipated for the festive Dedication Celebration, with guests traveling from all over the State of Colorado and many additional parts of the US. There will be live music, chef-prepared food, and the installation of a Mezuzah at the entrance of the building.

Event Details
In these times of strife, absorbing crisis after devastating crisis, traumatic event after traumatic event, we know that if humanity is to survive, let alone thrive, a radical shift must occur. In that spirit, I am offering a course focused on our need to evolve from the stories we hold central to our individual and communal identity.
If we are not aware of the stories that we carry from the past which no longer serve us, they will continue to repeat over generations, establishing an inescapable pattern. We are warned to be careful lest a story becomes assimilated into our self-understanding, our communal understanding or, even broader, as the human narrative.
To celebrate my 20th year of teaching at Kabbalah Experience, I am inviting you to join in the conversation about a new story for humanity. Over the centuries, Kabbalists have challenged the traditional interpretation of the Torah and suggested that a New Torah needs to be revealed for a new story to take root and blossom as a Tree of Life.
What is the life span of a story and how do we know when it is time to put it to rest? We will explore inspirational texts which reveal new ways of seeing old stories and which foreshadow the evolution of humankind. A New Story can change the course of history, it always has.

A key to consciousness in Kabbalah is the Tree of Life, a visual map of how infinite and finite flow into and from each other. We enter places, form relationships and pursue projects often with little understanding of how they come about, their meaning and the relevance of seeing beyond what manifests. In this introduction to the Tree of Life we learn about and then practice incorporating this system of energy flow in all our interactions.

On Monday, January 27, 2025, from Noon – 2:00pm (MT), in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Dr. Matt Wynia, MD, MPH, will lead a powerful discussion titled “How Healers Became Killers: Eugenics, Power, and Justice.” This talk delves into the chilling history of eugenics, tracing its influence on Nazi racial policies and its connection to U.S. racial laws, revealing how medicine has been used to perpetuate oppression. Joined by Dr. Spero M. Manson, PhD (Little Shell Chippewa), who will provide insights into the medical treatment of Indigenous peoples, the event challenges attendees to confront uncomfortable truths about medicine’s role in societal inequities. With reflections on history and exploration of contemporary issues like health disparities and genetic ethics, this thought-provoking event underscores the ongoing responsibility of medicine to advance justice and safeguard human dignity.

“A dream not interpreted is like a letter not read.” This quote is not from Freud or Jung but from the Zohar, the classic medieval Kabbalah text connecting dreams and our spiritual growth. We spend an average of 9 years dreaming. What do our dreams reflect to us of our experience? How are dreams guides for our emotional and spiritual development? Come and see the significance of dreams. Journaling and sharing your dreams helps you apply the Kabbalah dream framework.

Who Are You?: In this first semester of Inner Transformation you are challenged to strip away your previous understandings of who you are and explore the relationship between your outer selves, inner selves and your essence. Participants will have the opportunity to examine real local case studies related to STANDing up as allies for the African American community and brainstorm ways our community can come together to combat discrimination.
Past STAND convenings have developed a mission to foster positivity, kindness, awareness, and inclusion in Routt County. The entire Routt County Community is invited to attend.

Are our kids alright? Come hear new data from a national study on Jewish youth.
How can we help Jewish youth to be resilient in the face of rising antisemitism, political strife, and the everyday challenges that come with adolescence?
Join Moving Traditions as we dive into new data with Dr. Tobin Belzer, a researcher who will share key findings from the recent national teen survey from BeWell: Strength, Stress, and Support: A Portrait of American Jewish Teen Well-being.
Not only does the survey reflect what nearly 2,500 teens across the US had to say earlier this year – we will also hear live reactions from a panel of teens from Moving Traditions’ programs.
This free Raising Up Teens webinar for parents and educators of Jewish youth will also include actionable takeaways and resources to use with the teen in your life.

Special Screening of the documentary film The Return From The Other Planet and discussion with director Assaf Lapid
The Return From The Other Planet traces the life of Holocaust survivor and author Yehiel De-Nur, who concealed his identity behind the pseudonym “Ka-Tzetnik 135633.” Writing at night while wearing his striped camp uniform, De-Nur mined his memory of the two years he spent in Auschwitz. The resulting novels were widely read in the 1950s and 1960s and informed the way readers worldwide imagined the Holocaust.
In 1961, De-Nur testified at the Eichmann trial, publicly revealing his identity as the author Ka-Tzetnik for the first time. In one of the most dramatic moments of the trial, he collapsed on the stand while recounting the terrors of Auschwitz, which he described as “The Other Planet”—a place beyond the realm of human understanding.
Increasingly haunted by the trauma of his Auschwitz experiences, De-Nur turned to experimental psychiatric treatments using LSD. For over a year, he underwent psychedelic treatment in the Netherlands. His search for peace and clarity led him to new perceptions of humanity and war, and ultimately to reject the notion of “The Other Planet.”
This remarkable film explores De-Nur’s struggle to return from “The Other Planet” and examines how individuals and societies reconcile a traumatic past with a return to life. Following the film, director Assaf Lapid will be joined on stage by Denver psychologist A J Grovert to discuss healing from trauma and the use of psychedelics in the treatment of victims of mass atrocity.
The Marcus Lecture is presented annually by the Holocaust Awareness Institute at the University of Denver’s Center for Judaic Studies, this year in partnership with the Denver Jewish Film Festival and the Mizel Arts and Culture Center. This year’s Marcus Lecture is held on January 27 in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945.
Now in its 22nd year, the lecture series began in 2003 on the initiative of Audrey Friedman Marcus and her family in memory of her late husband, Jewish educator Fred Marcus. Since 2022, the Marcus Lecture additionally honors co-founder Audrey Friedman Marcus. Donations to support this centerpiece of Denver’s Holocaust commemoration and education initiatives can be made at bit.ly/support-marcus. Sponsors at a level of $180 or more receive complimentary tickets to the Lecture.
Tickets can be purchased at tickets.jccdenver.org/marcus. Holocaust survivors, educators, and students attend free and may contact hai@du.edu or 303-871-3020 to request tickets.

UPDATE ON SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE WITH RABBA HANNAH KAPNIK ASHAR
We have made ONE MORE SCHEDULING CHANGE to the learning series on the Amidah with Rabba Hannah.
The next class will be January 31st, instead of January 10th.
The last class will now be on February 7th.
Each class will go from 12-1:15 at Kohelet. Snacks will be served. Even if you have not able to attend the earlier sessions, we will review our previous discussions together, so don’t let that stop you from attending! We are learning beautiful new ways of attending to the Amidah prayer. Each new lesson breaks down a different part of the Amidah, so even if you missed previous sessions, you can get a lot of attending each new one.
As a reminder, the class is called “Ancestors, Powers, and Holiness”: The First Three Blessings of the Amidah as Poetry. What becomes possible when we know the intention of the poets who crafted our liturgy? Join us as we look at the poetry of the first three blessings of the Amidah – the central Jewish prayer. We will explore the contemporary liturgy, ancient versions of it, and the referenced biblical intertexts – the biblical stories and concepts invoked – to deepen our connection with prayer and its purpose. After exploring the text and context of each blessing, we will each craft our own prayer pages, making art alongside the text of the blessing.
Hannah’s last service leadership with us as part of the Scholar in Residence will still be on Friday night January 31st.
Please RSVP to attend: Daniel Hettleman at danielhettleman@gmail.com

Learn More about Rachel: Rachel “Chuch” Grafman is a personal finance coach with her practice Prosperity Personal Finance. She began her financial journey as many people do, saddled with debt, feeling out of control with money, and unsure what to do about it. When she graduated college, she quickly outspent her income and had to learn how to not only manage her money, but how to leverage it to work for her. She paid off her student and auto loans in full less than four years after graduating and bought her first condo a year later. In the process, she gained skills and tools that she realized weren’t universally known, so she started Prosperity to help others help themselves. Chuch has received training from the University of Wisconsin and the Financial Coach Academy to help her best serve her clients and community. She is an active member of YAD and various other Colorado Jewish organizations.

Israel has long been a subject of fascination for the world, but in recent years the media’s treatment of the Israel-Palestinian conflict has become an obsession that erases background and context and is inflaming global hostility toward Israelis and Jews. How has this media malfunction happened? What does it look like on the ground? And what can be done? Friedman, a Canadian-Israeli journalist and author, will use his years in the foreign press corps to answer those questions and help observers understand the gap between the real country of Israel and the way it is portrayed.
About Matti Friedman
Matti Friedman is a journalist and the award-winning author of four works of non-fiction.
Matti’s most recent book Who by Fire: Leonard Cohen in the Sinai is an account of Leonard Cohen’s concert tour to the front lines of the Yom Kippur War. The book has been listed by both Vanity Fair and Mosaic Magazine as among their top books of 2022 and is being made into a limited TV dramatic series by Keshet International.
Matti’s 2019 book, Spies of No Country: Secret Lives at the Birth of Israel, won the 2019 Natan Prize and the Canadian Jewish Book Award, among other prizes. His 2016 book, Pumpkinflowers: A Soldier’s Story of a Forgotten War was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book and won the 2017 Vine Award for Canadian Jewish literature, among other honors. Mattis first book, The Aleppo Codex, was awarded the 2014 Sami Rohr Prize and the American Library Association’s Sophie Brody Medal.
A former Associated Press correspondent, Matti’s work as a reporter has taken him from Israel to Lebanon, Morocco, Moscow, the Caucasus, and Washington, DC. Two critical essays he wrote about media coverage of Israel after the 2014 Gaza war, for Tablet and The Atlantic, triggered intense discussion and have been shared on Facebook more than 130,000 times. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Tablet, Smithsonian, and elsewhere.
Matti was born in Toronto and lives in Jerusalem.

Presented in partnership with The CELL and Temple Emanuel
Don’t miss this talk by counterterrorism and intelligence expert Dr. Matthew Levitt, who looks at the future of the north in Israel with Hezbollah. Leavitt is author of Hezbollah: The Global Footprint of Lebanon’s Party of God. His book was the first thorough examination of Hezbollah’s covert activities beyond Lebanon’s borders, including its financial and logistical support networks and its criminal and terrorist operations worldwide. Levitt will show convincingly how Hezbollah’s willingness to use violence at home and abroad, its global reach, and its proxy-patron relationship with the Iranian regime all continue to be of serious concern.
Registration coming soon.

Celebrate Purim with us at Purim Drag Queen Bingo on March 8! This year, we’re leaning into a theme that connects to our Jewish American culture: Boca Raton. For the uninitiated, Boca Raton, Florida, or “Boca” as it’s typically called in a heavy east coast Jewish accent, is the home to many retired Bubbies and Zaidies. The temperature is nice, and yet there is always something to kvetch about. Join our Host Laura Menorah, as we celebrate Purim JCC-style, with a costume contest, bingo, slightly raunchy humor, and of course, a good nosh. For more information, visit https://www.jccdenver.org/portfolio-items/purim-drag-queen-bingo/. Tickets are required and are offered on a sliding scale.

Jewish Explorers welcomes Jewish and multifaith families with preschool and elementary school-age children. Through weekly and monthly classroom programs, Shabbat dinners, and holiday celebrations, we provide opportunities to learn about Jewish values, culture, traditions, and holidays through interactive activities, arts and crafts, music, PJ library books, and more. Together, we have built a community that is warm, welcoming, and celebrates the diversity of our families, connecting families to each other, the Colorado Jewish community, and Israel.

Join us as we unite to honor the memory of those who have bravely served and sacrificed for the Jewish State, as well as those lost to senseless acts of terrorism. In addition to commemorating these heroes, we will also recognize the enduring connection our community shares with Israel.
Yom HaZikaron, or Israeli Memorial Day, serves as a poignant reminder for Israelis and Jewish communities worldwide to honor the sacrifices of fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism.
On this day, Israelis pause their daily activities for a two-minute standstill, marked by blaring sirens, to collectively pay homage to the fallen. This ritual, established by law in 1963, has evolved into a deeply ingrained aspect of Israeli culture, resonating globally.
If you wish to memorialize a friend or family member who was a fallen Israeli soldier or victim of terror, kindly reach out to Nelly Ben Tal at nbental@jewishcolorado.org.
Let us stand together in remembrance and solidarity.

Please register to let us know how many to expect, and if you can bring a vegetarian dish or help with set-up and clean-up.
This service occurs on the first Saturday of every month at B’nai West (1700 S Grant St). Please check our website for the registration!

Event Details
American Jews have long been united by shared commitments to liberalism, equal rights, and inclusivity, but recent challenges to democracy have revealed deep ideological rifts within the community. From debates over Zionism and Israel’s policies to divergent visions of Jewish political engagement in America, these divisions are reshaping how Jews understand safety, power, and responsibility. In this session, we will explore the historical models of Jewish security, the ideological frameworks shaping today’s debates, and how these tensions reflect broader societal shifts. Participants will be invited to consider new approaches to Jewish thriving that bridge divides and align with enduring Jewish values in a rapidly changing world.
