Every year, JEWISHcolorado welcomes post-high school teens (Shinshinim) from Israel to spend a gap year in our community before returning to Israel for their mandatory military service. This is the first year we have five Shinshinim, and they work at more than 30 sites in our Colorado community. One of these sites is Congregation Rodef Shalom, where JEWISHcolorado’s Shinshinit, Yeara, plays a vital role in enriching the community’s connection to Israel. Through her weekly work at Rodef Shalom’s preschool and religious school, Yeara inspires a deep understanding of culture, tradition, and togetherness.
A Living Bridge for Young Learners
Yeara spends her Wednesday mornings at Rodef Shalom’s preschool, engaging children aged 3-5 with hands-on activities rooted in Israeli culture and Jewish traditions. According to Bobby Parris, the preschool’s Pedagogical Director, “The very thought of her being here, speaking Hebrew, playing with the children, allows children at young ages to see that Israel is more than just a place; they see it through her eyes.”
The presence of a Shinshinit brings a unique energy to the classroom. “Yeara isn’t a child, but she’s not yet an adult. This helps her connect with the children in ways we, as staff, sometimes can’t. They’ll always remember the activities she provides,” says Parris.
Enriching Jewish Identity Through the Religious School
In the afternoon, Yeara shifts to Rodef Shalom’s Religious School where she engages children aged 10-12 with lessons about Hebrew, Israel, and stories from the Parasha.
“Yeara is amazing. Beyond her thoughtful preparation for activities, she lights up the room and brings a different energy,” says Rabbi Carrie Benveniste, Rodef Shalom’s Director of Congregational Learning. “With everything happening in Israel right now, the opportunity to see and connect with a real person makes an incredible difference. Children experience the diversity of Judaism through Yeara, which deepens their understanding.”
A Partnership That Grows and Gives Back
“We initially started with the Religious School, but Rodef loved the Shinshins so much that the connection expanded to the preschool as well. They’ve embraced the Shinshins as part of the community, not just in the classroom,” says Michelle Ruby, Director of Israeli Teen Emissaries & Education at JEWISHcolorado.
For Daphna Strelitz, Foundation Manager at JEWISHcolorado, whose son Judah attends Rodef Shalom’s preschool, the presence of Shinshin adds another layer of connection. “It gives Judah context for the stories we tell at home and the experiences we share from Israel,” she says. “Having a living example like Yeara adds a whole new dimension.”
Judah’s admiration for Yeara is evident. “He talks about her at home all the time,” Strelitz shares. “For him, Israel is no longer just a place in the Bible, it’s alive, tangible, and personal.”
Strengthening Community Ties
This collaboration between JEWISHcolorado and Rodef Shalom exemplifies the power of partnership in building bridges between Colorado and Israel. Through Yeara’s presence, children and families gain a deeper connection to Israel and their Jewish identity, creating lasting memories and meaningful relationships.
As Parris sums it up, “The Shinshinim bring Israel to life in ways that inspire connection, understanding, and unity. It’s a gift to have Yeara as part of our community.”
