Golshim L’Chaim – Ski To Live is a unique program that brings injured Israeli IDF veterans to Aspen for a week of healing, adventure, and camaraderie. Founded by Rabbi Mendel Mintz of Aspen’s Chabad Jewish Community Center, the program offers participants a chance to regain confidence and joy through skiing and snowboarding. The mountains of Aspen serve as a place of challenge and renewal, helping these veterans create lasting memories that empower them long after they return to Israel. JEWISHcolorado has supported Golshim L’Chaim for the past eighteen years, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening ties between Israel and the Colorado Jewish community.

This year, 10 veterans participated, each carrying their own story of resilience. Rotem Ben Tal, JEWISHcolorado’s Shlicha Nelly Ben Tal’s partner, joined as a volunteer, assisting them throughout the week.

“As volunteers, we were with them all day—preparing meals, talking, and processing the experience together. Many wanted to share their stories, and I’m grateful we could be there for that,” he said.

Ben Tal recalls powerful moments that underscored the deep connections formed. “On the first day, I spoke with a soldier about his life. When I mentioned I was from Mashabei Sadeh, he said that his commander was from there too. We soon realized his commander was my cousin. It was a striking reminder of how small and interconnected the Israeli story is, even in Aspen. Another moment was when a medic shared a difficult wartime experience. As he spoke, two other soldiers realized they had been part of the same event but from different perspectives. Witnessing them process and share was deeply moving.”

Reflecting on his motivation, Ben Tal shared, “Last year, my family participated for a weekend, and it was amazing. This year, I knew I had to come for the full week. As Israeli emissaries in Colorado, we’re here to build connections and engage in meaningful initiatives. I believe it was valuable for the soldiers to have fellow Israelis around them, offering cultural understanding and support. Many arrived with no skiing experience, and by the end of the week, they had improved tremendously. More than anything, seeing their smiles and sense of achievement was unforgettable. This program provides a rare and crucial opportunity for them to heal and rediscover their strength. They deserve all the support in the world.”
